Becoming a remote accountant is an excellent option for anyone who is looking for a work-from-home job. Remote accountants are responsible for managing the financial aspects of their clients’ businesses. This includes, but is not limited to, payroll, taxes, and bookkeeping. Remote accountants typically work from home on a freelance basis. This means that they are able to set their own hours and work in an environment that they enjoy. It also means that they have the freedom to take on as many or as few clients as they want at any given time.

Accountants can work from home since most accounting tasks, like preparing and maintaining financial documents and analyzing financial data, are already digitized and can be done from anywhere in the world. Most of these duties are digitized and can be easily done remotely. According to a 2018 survey conducted by Convergence Coaching, many accounting firms had been using a work-from-home practice even before the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. According to this survey, 43% of firms had employees who regularly worked from home. 41% of firms also reported that they hire employees who are not in the same region as the company’s headquarters. After the pandemic, these numbers saw steady growth. Today, remote accountancy is a growing trend in the industry, and many accountants can work from home.

Is Remote Accountancy Productive?

In a 2020 survey conducted by GAAPweb, 78% of UK accountants claimed that they find remote accountancy more productive when asked to compare their work from home days with work from office days. They felt that they are more productive due to fewer distractions and fewer or more effective meetings. Most of the respondents in this survey also felt that the greatest advantage of remote working is avoiding the daily commute. Interestingly, 93% of accountants in this survey agreed that they would like to continue from work even after usual office work resumed.

In another survey involving 140 accounting professionals from 4 US firms, respondents felt that in remote work, they could get more work done in the same number of hours. But this view was mostly shared by accountants who had some previous experience in remote work. Furthermore, when asked what they needed to make their remote work more effective and efficient,  they pointed out the need for stable internet connections, comfortable desks and chairs, etc. In general, they expressed their need for a fully set up home office.

What Do You Need to Become a Remote Accountant?

You can’t take on remote accountancy jobs just because you have some knowledge in accountancy. You need to have proper qualifications and necessary experience, just like traditional accountants (accountants who work from the office). To take on a remote accountant job, you have to have a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a closely related field. To succeed in the field, you also need a professional license, such as a certified professional accountant credential. In addition, you should ideally have experience in a traditional office setting as well before transitioning to work from home.
