How to Set Up a Home Office in a Bedroom?

Working from home in bedroom

Not everyone has the space to set up a separate home office in their homes. Some set up their home office in their kitchen, dining room, or living room. For those who prefer privacy, the bedroom is the natural choice for a home office. But working from home in a bedroom is not an easy task. It requires discipline and willpower, especially if you are someone who loves to sleep. This is why some amount of planning is required before you create a bedroom office. In this article, I will share with you some tips and tricks on how to set up a home office in a bedroom.

How Do I Set Up Home Office in My Bedroom?

1.      Declutter and Organize Your Bedroom

Before you set up a home office in a bedroom, clean the room well and remove all unnecessary things. This will make room for your office. There are many ways to increase the storage space in your room: you can mount shelves on your bedroom wall, keep storage bins and baskets under your desk, or buy a bed with drawers. This will help you to keep your bedroom office tidy and organized.

And don’t forget to keep your room clean and organized even after setting up the office. A clean and clutter-free work area improves your productivity and keeps you happy!

2. Select a Comfortable Bed

Do you know that we spend a third of our lives sleeping? A comfortable bed is important for restful sleep. There are many bed options you can choose from canopy beds, ottoman beds, Murphy beds, divan beds, etc. Ottoman beds and divan beds also offer storage space in the bedroom. Sunken beds look modern. In addition, when the bed is not on a level with the desk, the room can look less cramped.

3. Choose a Good Desk and Chair

Your desk and chair are the most important elements in your office. There are many things to consider when selecting a desk and chair for your bedroom office.

When it comes to an office desk, there are a few choices depending on the size of your room and the nature of your work. If you don’t want a traditional office desk, you can opt for a standing desk or a floating desk. A floating desk is a space-saving option that is mounted on your wall; you can drop down the desk anytime you want to work. If you have a small bedroom, you can get rid of your nightstand and use a small, adjustable desk, which will serve you well in holding a lamp, glass of water, glasses, etc.

Your office chair also has a big impact on your health, especially if your job involves working long hours in front of the computer. This is why you have to invest in a supportive, comfortable chair, preferably an ergonomic office chair. If your work doesn’t involve sitting on a chair for long hours, you can even furnish your home office with a comfortable stool.

4. Decide on Appropriate Lighting

Good lighting can boost productivity and improve your mood. If your bedroom has a window, try to place your desk near the window. This way, you can take the maximum benefits of natural light. If the window in your bedroom office is small, you can make use of lamplight to complement the natural light. For a windowless home office, you will have to use a bright desk lamp or warm overhead lights. Whatever lighting options you use, make sure to avoid lights that reflect glare off your screen.

How Do I Hide Home Office in Bedroom?

Having a home office in a bedroom can sometimes disturb both your work and sleep. Looking at your bed from your office can make you sleepy, and looking at your office from your bed might remind you of work left undone, even when you are getting ready to sleep. I personally find this the main drawback of working from home in a bedroom. There should always be a clear distinction between your work area and relaxation area. In fact, most experts advise against setting up an office in the bedroom.

So how do you hide a home office in a bedroom? Well, I recommend separating the two areas using a curtain or a room divider. There are many options in the market; for example, upholstered screens, frosted glass walls, and wood-slatted partitions. You can even use pegboards to separate your bedroom office from your relaxation area.

If you want to make sure that your office remains hidden from view, you can hide it in your closet. But this is only possible if you have a spacious bedroom. When you are done with work, you can simply close the door and say goodbye to your closet office.

Where To Put a Desk in Bedroom?

There are many places to put your desk in a bedroom. But you have to consider several factors before selecting the best place for your office desk in the bedroom. These include the size of the room, the natural light available in the room, and the position of other furniture. Given below are some places I recommend:

Behind the Headboard –  If your headboard is high and the bed is at the center of the room, you can place your desk behind the headboard. This way, you won’t have to see your workspace when you’re in bed. But this placement is only possible when a bedroom is spacious.

In front of the Window –  If your bedroom has a window, place your desk in front of it. This will give you an office with a view.

In a Corner of the Room – If you place your desk in the corner of the bedroom, away from the bed, this will create distance between your office space and sleeping area.

In the Closet – If you want to hide your office in the bedroom, you can place your desk in the closet.

Against the Wall – You can place your desk perpendicular to a wall. You can also decorate the wall with pictures and other mementos.

Tip: A traditional desk is not an essential item for a bedroom office. You can use a low cabinet or dresser, a windowsill, or a floating desk as your office desk.

How Do I Build an Office Space in a Small Bedroom?

In the above sections, I already explained to you how to set up a home office in a bedroom. However, office space in a small bedroom can make you feel stifling, negatively affecting your productivity. So if your bedroom is small, you will have to take extra steps to save space and make the room appear spacious. You can use the following tips to get the maximum use of the space in your bedroom office.

  • Use a floating desk – when you start work, you can pop it up, and when you’re done, you can collapse it.
  • Find hidden storage solutions – too much stuff can make your room look small and cramped, so find storage options like trunks, baskets, and bins, which can be kept out of sight.
  • Add plants – plants can make your room feel bigger and brighter.
  • Hide cables and wires – Cables and wires all over the place can make a room messy and confined, so try to hide them as much as possible.
  • Use minimal furniture – You can make your room appear large by using only the essential pieces of furniture in your bedroom office.

Some people suggest using dividers to separate the two areas in the bedroom or using two paint schemes for the office and the sleeping area. But I don’t recommend these tips because I feel that these can make a small bedroom appear smaller.

What do you think? Does dividing a small bedroom into a workspace and relaxing area make it smaller or cramped? Let us know in the comments below.
