What is a Staycation?
A staycation is a holiday you take in your home country, usually in a place very close to your home. The word staycation itself is a portmanteau made out of the two words stay and vacation. Another name for staycation is holistay. The Oxford online dictionary defines staycation as a “holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.”
A staycation can be a one-day trip or an overnight trip. It can take as long as you want, but the main point is that you stay in the near vicinity of your house. For example, someone living in Melbourne visiting the Healesville Sanctuary (which is just an hour’s drive away from the city) for an Australian wildlife experience. You don’t need a visa, passport, or an expensive flight to go on a staycation.

There are many things you can try during a staycation – visiting an amusement park, going to the beach, staying at a local hotel, going on a hike, attending a local event, going to the cinema, enjoying the countryside, etc. We can also describe staycation as a form of domestic tourism. It supports local businesses and boosts the local economy.
Staycations came into popularity around the world with the COVID-19 pandemic. The travel restrictions and the isolation as a consequence of the pandemic have made many people indulge themselves in short vacations near their homes. According to a 2021 study on Coronavirus: impact on staycations in the UK, staycation is the fastest-growing holiday-related search term in the UK. This study shows that many British people showed an interest in domestic tourism following the COVID-19 pandemic.
What is a Workation?
Workation or workcation (work + vacation) refers to the idea of working while traveling. In other words, it’s a vacation that gives you a unique chance to work remotely while letting you travel and relax. This blend of leisure and work is an ideal option for those who love to travel.
You can enjoy workations anywhere – close to your home or in a country far away from your home. The duration of your workation can also vary – it can be a short trip or many months away from your home. However, a study in the US has shown that most American remote workers prefer 1-2 week and 3-4 week workations over shorter or longer workations.

With remote working becoming extremely popular due to the pandemic, many workers now prefer to work outside the office. With a portable computer and a stable internet connection, you can easily work from wherever you want in the world.
